Help your students select a SPEAR topic
Step 1: Each student must choose one target from the 10 SPEAR Targets.

They need to think of this choice as picking the tool they will use to inspire their audience. The SPEAR should reflect their passions, their beliefs, and be a story only they can tell.

If they need help choosing a SPEAR, ask them to ask themselves: What do I believe? What matters to me? What are my values? And then see if any of the answers align with a particular SPEAR.

If they’re still struggling, ask them to look at the list of 10 SPEAR Targets and reflect on which one stands out the most to them. The one that jumps out the most might be the topic for them.

Step 2: Encourage them to start their research straight away.

Ask them: If you had to convince someone you’d never met to care about your chosen SPEAR, what would you say? Are there any statistics that relate to your SPEAR that have captured your attention in the past or that you find particularly compelling? They need to start writing the answers out to these question.

Step 3: Encourage them to look around at the world.

Ask them to think: What challenges need solutions? What conversations need starting? What changes need champions?

When deciding on their SPEAR Target, they need to think deeply about what sets their heart on fire.
